From individual machines to automated production.

Not all businesses need to switch to full automation straight away. The key is that the solution should be suited to current production needs and able to evolve in the future. HEDELIUS’s phased approach sets out a clear path: from a set-up machine to operation without human intervention. This enables manufacturing companies to gradually increase spindle running time without losing their flexibility.

Levels of automation
Practical examples

Many companies realise that automation would be beneficial.
But they don’t know where to start.

On a day-to-day basis, there is rarely a shortage of work. What is lacking is the right approach to getting started. The machine is at a standstill whilst being set up. Skilled staff are in short supply. Orders change frequently. Small batches increase the workload. At the same time, production must remain able to deliver without taking unnecessary risks. It is precisely for this reason that an overly ambitious solution often acts as a deterrent. An overly modest solution does not solve the problem. Companies need an approach tailored to their current production whilst leaving the door open for future developments.

Automate gradually rather than changing everything all at once.

The four-step model enables the planning of automation. Each step brings a tangible benefit to the business: from investment security to reduced downtime associated with changeovers, as well as longer periods of operation without human intervention. The aim is not to implement cutting-edge technology. The aim is to achieve more stable production, which reduces the workload on existing staff and optimises the productive running time of the machines. Overview of the benefits:

Level 1:
READY

Level 2:
RUN

Level 3:
GROW

Level 4:
SCALE

Be ready without committing today.

Reduce set-up times and increase spindle running time.

Prepare multiple orders and plan production more efficiently.

Make productive use of off-peak hours, at night and at weekends.

Automation must adapt to the workshop, not the other way round.

HEDELIUS does not view automation in isolation. What matters most is the interaction between the workpiece, the machine, the pallet magazine, the clamping devices, the tooling, the operating staff and the available floor space. That is why the design process does not start with the most ambitious solution, but with your actual production. It is from these considerations that an automation solution emerges which works in day-to-day operations:

  • Which parts wear out frequently?

  • Where do downtimes occur?

  • How much time do staff spend setting up the machines?

  • What cycle times are achievable per order?

  • How much floor space do you have available?

The four-step model.

Not all production lines start at the same stage of automation. HEDELIUS’s 4-step model shows you which level of automation suits your current needs and how you can gradually expand your production. From preparing for automation through to the productive automation of pallet handling, right through to the targeted utilisation of unattended operating times. Each stage delivers measurable added value and opens up new growth opportunities.

Stage 1: READY

Ready for automation, without committing yourself

READY is the right choice if you are currently manufacturing manually but wish to keep the option of automation open. The machine is set up in such a way that automation can be integrated at a later date. You remain flexible and avoid unnecessary modifications when the next step becomes economically viable.

Particularly suitable if you:

  • currently still manufacture predominantly by hand
  • would like to automate at a later date
  • need investment security
  • want to avoid production downtime during a future expansion
vers READY
Stage 2: RUN

More spindle time in day-to-day operations

RUN is the entry-level solution for productive pallet automation. Whilst the machine is running, the next pallet is being prepared. This reduces downtime during set-up. The machine remains productive for longer. The benefits are particularly noticeable with small and medium batch sizes.

Particularly well suited if you:

  • want to reduce set-up times
  • want to produce more parts in the same amount of time
  • want to ease the workload on existing staff
  • want to achieve longer running times with limited floor space
vers RUN
Stage 3: GROW

Plan more jobs thanks to the storage system

GROW is ideal if you want to prepare multiple jobs and process them in an organised manner. The pallet storage system creates a buffer in production. Repeat parts, small batches and prepared jobs can be scheduled in an organised manner. This brings greater stability to your processes and improves capacity utilisation.

Particularly well suited if you:

  • wish to prepare multiple orders
  • want to make better use of off-peak times
  • manufacture repeat parts and small batches
  • need greater planning certainty
About GROW
Stage 4: SCALE

Making targeted use of unmanned running time

SCALE is the appropriate level when processes are stable enough for the machine to run for extended periods without operator intervention. This does not mean that everything runs by itself. It means that workpieces, tools, programmes, clamping devices and controls are prepared in such a way that the machine can remain productive even during breaks, at night or at weekends.

Particularly well suited if you:

  • wish to utilise night-time or weekend running times
  • have a firm grasp of recurring processes
  • want to relieve skilled staff of ancillary tasks
  • wish to build capacity without having to fully staff additional shifts
About SCALE

Three steps to determining the right level of automation

Step 1: Understanding the
manufacturing process

Step 2: Determine the
level

Step 3: Implement the
solution in a stable manner

We examine your parts, batch sizes, set-up times, production times, clamping devices, tooling and existing processes.

Together, we determine whether READY, RUN, GROW or SCALE currently offers the greatest benefit and what expansion might be advisable in the future.

The machine, automation and process are designed so that your production does not become more complex, but is easier to plan.

Determine the level of automation

It’s up to you to decide what to do next.

The phased approach reduces the risks associated with the investment. You do not have to decide today exactly what your production will look like in five years’ time. You are establishing a foundation capable of evolving in step with your business. This is particularly important for medium-sized manufacturing companies. After all, orders, production volumes and staff availability are likely to change. A good automation solution must not restrict this flexibility. HEDELIUS helps you take the next appropriate step – not necessarily the most ambitious one.

Automation is cost-effective when it helps to reduce downtime.

The economic impact is felt most keenly where production time is currently lost: during set-up, maintenance, research, equipment changes and during quiet periods. The four-step model makes it possible to realise these potentials. This enables capacity to be increased without necessarily having to recruit additional staff or purchase new machinery.

01 READY protects your investment.

02 RUN reduces downtime associated with changeovers.

03 GROW increases predictable utilisation rates.

04 SCALE enables you to benefit from additional operating time outside core working hours.

Frequently asked questions about the HEDELIUS progressive model.

Do I have to go fully automated straight away?

No. That is precisely what the phased approach is for. You can start with a ready-to-use machine and expand later, when the order situation, range of parts and cost-effectiveness make it worthwhile.

Which level is best for beginners?

For many businesses, RUN is the first tangible step towards increased productivity. With this system, set-up takes place during main production time whilst the machine continues to operate. If you do not yet wish to automate, READY is the ideal starting point.

When is GROW worth it?

GROW is worthwhile when several jobs need to be prepared and the machine can run from memory for an extended period. This is particularly useful for repeat parts, small batches and jobs that can be planned effectively.

What do you need for SCALE?

Stable processes, sufficient tools, secure clamping devices, pre-programmed sequences and reliable monitoring. LIGHTS OUT is not a starting point, but the result of meticulously prepared processes.

Will production remain flexible?

Yes. That is the essence of the model. You choose the level that suits you today, whilst leaving the door open for future expansion.

Find out which stage really helps to lighten your production workload.

Whether it’s READY, RUN, GROW or SCALE: it is not the most ambitious automation solution that matters, but the next economically sensible step.
